MISS UNIVERSE PHILIPPINES 2016 MAXINE MEDINA:

GRAMMAR WENT WRONG

A Reaction Paper

Binibining Pilipinas 2016 Maxine Medina is one of the most well-known personality at this point of the year for she was the representative of the Philippines on the Miss Universe 2016 Pageant. About three weeks before the actual Miss Universe 2016 Pageant, the Binibining Pilipinas Charities, Inc. (BPCI) with its chairperson, Ms. Stella Araneta, hosted a send-off party for Maxine at the Novotel Hotel in Quezon City last January 10, 2017, Tuesday. Reporters from different media networks such as Manila Bulletin, PTV, and many more came in the said party to interview Maxine about her preparations for the pageant. After the party, Maxine received harsh comments and was bashed by the netizens. Most of them are dismayed by what they say as Maxine’s lack of depth answers, grammatical errors, and irrelevant answers to the questions given to her.

Maxine, as the Philippines’ representative for the Miss Universe 2016 Pageant, should be mentally and emotionally ready for all the bashing and bad things thrown to her. The more popular you are, the more you get bashers. With Maxine’s flaws and errors, it outraged the Filipino community and forced them to compare her to the other Filipina beauty queens. Some even suggested her to just use the Filipino language on the Question and Answer portion on the pageant day and ask for an interpreter instead. In this way, they say, she might be able to express herself clearly. The send-off party for Maxine that should supposed to be an instrument for her to gain support from the Filipinos unfortunately turned the netizens into bashers. Most of the netizens were commenting just to be with the trend. Even if the people do not know the real story behind why such thing happen, they will just bash someone right away. This is the problem of the society. Narrow-minded people are always the first persons to criticize other people.  They do not broaden their perspectives and just allow themselves to be influenced by the majority.

The 26-year-old Filipina beauty was in the Top 6  out of 86 candidates around the world in the pageant held last Monday, January 30, 2017. The video of the interview at the party was posted by ShowbizNest Website on YouTube last January 13, 2017, Friday. YouTube is a video-sharing website wherein anyone who has internet can access this website freely. After about three weeks of being posted online, it garnered 50, 508 views with 25 likes, 42 dislikes, and 94 comments as of January 31, 2017. The statistical data of the views showed how viral the video is. The number of likes and dislikes also showed that majority of the people, especially the Filipinos, are not satisfied with the skills of their candidate. The Philippines should just show continuous support for Maxine instead of constantly criticizing her about her grammatical errors. If the society just open their eyes, they can see that even persons from well-known families also commit mistakes. Filipinos are Filipinos. May this incident awaken the true Filipino spirit dwelling inside the hearts of every Filipino in order for them to be united as one. Maxine, on the other hand, did her best in the pageant. She absolutely proved to the world that Filipinas are confidently beautiful with a heart.
